When might IVF be discussed?

It may be considered for blocked fallopian tubes, some sperm-related factors, endometriosis, difficulties with ovulation or unexplained infertility. IVF is not automatically the first treatment for everyone. A fertility assessment helps identify the likely causes and compare options such as IUI and IVF.

What does an IVF cycle involve?

1. Assessment and planning: review medical history and appropriate investigations, which may include ultrasound, hormone tests and semen analysis.
2. Ovarian stimulation: medication and monitoring to support the development of follicles.
3. Egg collection and fertilisation: eggs are retrieved and fertilised in a laboratory. ICSI may be discussed in selected cases.
4. Embryo care and transfer: embryos are monitored and an embryo may be transferred or frozen depending on the clinical plan.
5. Follow-up: the team will advise when to test for pregnancy and discuss the next steps.

Does IVF always involve ICSI?

No. ICSI is a specific method of fertilising eggs and is considered when clinically appropriate; your specialist can explain the reason for recommending it.
