Choosing contraception: questions beyond effectiveness

A contraception decision is about more than a single effectiveness number. You may care about control over timing, protection against sexually transmitted infections, how a method affects bleeding and whether you want pregnancy in the future. A clinician can help compare options with your own health history in mind.

Different methods meet different needs

Condoms offer STI protection that pills and intrauterine devices do not. Hormonal methods differ in how often you use them and how they may change periods. A copper IUD is hormone-free but can affect bleeding for some people. Permanent methods are intended for people who do not want future biological pregnancy. Ask what typical use looks like in daily life, not only how a method works in a trial.

Consider your medical history and preferences

Mention migraines, blood-clot history, blood pressure, medicines and any side effects you previously experienced. Ask about the time needed for a method to become effective and whether you need a back-up method during a switch. Availability, follow-up and cost matter too. You deserve a discussion without pressure to choose a particular method.

Know when to ask for timely help

If contraception has failed or unprotected sex has occurred, emergency contraception may be time-sensitive: seek advice promptly. If you develop concerning symptoms after starting a method, contact the treating clinician rather than stopping treatment without a plan. Keep in mind that preventing pregnancy and preventing infections are separate questions.

Do I need a consultation to discuss contraception?

A consultation can be especially useful when you have medical conditions, take medicines, want a longer-acting method or have had side effects. It helps personalise a choice rather than relying on a generic list.
