Understanding an AMH test in fertility care

Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is a blood test often discussed during fertility assessment. It can help estimate how the ovaries may respond to stimulation, but it is not a yes-or-no test of whether you can become pregnant. A result is most useful alongside age, history and other findings.

What is AMH used for?

AMH is produced by small ovarian follicles. Fertility teams may use it, sometimes with an ultrasound antral follicle count, when planning a medication dose for egg retrieval. Laboratories and reference ranges vary. A high or low value may lead to a more detailed conversation, but the number alone does not diagnose a specific cause of infertility or determine the quality of an egg.

What does a low result not mean?

A low AMH result does not mean pregnancy is impossible, and it should not be used alone to decide that IUI or IVF is futile. Likewise, a higher result cannot guarantee a pregnancy. Age is an important factor in egg quality that AMH does not directly measure. Results should be interpreted by someone who understands why the test was ordered.

Questions to take to your appointment

Ask whether an ultrasound or another test is needed, whether the result changes the proposed treatment and what uncertainties remain. If you are considering egg freezing, discuss how your age and likely response affect planning without treating a single estimate as a promise. Avoid making urgent decisions based only on an online AMH chart.

Can AMH tell me when menopause will start?

It cannot reliably predict an individual menopause date or your chance of natural conception. Discuss irregular cycles or other symptoms with a clinician.
