Getting started
When should you see a fertility specialist?
Trying to conceive can be stressful, and there is no one timetable that fits every couple. A fertility consultation is a chance to understand what might be affecting conception, not a commitment to IVF. Both partners' histories matter, and the next step may be simple testing or a discussion about timing.
When is an assessment worth considering?
Many people seek help after about a year of regular unprotected sex without pregnancy. Earlier advice may be sensible if the person trying to conceive is 35 or older, periods are very irregular or absent, there is known endometriosis or tubal disease, or there has been a prior fertility concern. These are starting points, not rules that mean you must wait. A clinician can take your individual circumstances into account.
What happens at the first visit?
Expect questions about menstrual cycles, previous pregnancies, operations, medicines, medical conditions and lifestyle. A clinician may recommend an ultrasound, selected hormone tests or a semen analysis. Testing both partners avoids placing all attention on one person. Bring earlier reports if you have them, but you do not need to arrange every possible test before the appointment.
How do you prepare?
Write down how long you have been trying, typical cycle dates and the questions that matter most to you. Ask what each suggested test can and cannot tell you, what follow-up is needed, and whether there are less intensive options before assisted reproduction. If you are travelling from Thane, Mulund or Ghatkopar, confirm the current Mumbai consultation venue before making the trip.
Does seeing a specialist mean I need IVF?
No. The purpose of assessment is to understand the situation and discuss appropriate options. Some people need no treatment, while others may consider medication, IUI, IVF or a different plan.
