After egg retrieval: recovery and questions to ask

Egg retrieval is a procedure used in IVF and egg freezing after ovarian stimulation. Recovery varies, so the discharge instructions from your treating team take priority over general advice online. Plan time to get home safely and know how to contact the clinic if you feel unwell.

What may happen on the day?

A team member should explain the procedure, the form of anaesthesia or sedation, fasting instructions and consent before you attend. The eggs are collected using ultrasound guidance. You may need someone to accompany you home, and you should ask when it is safe to drive, work or exercise. The number of eggs collected is not the same as the number of embryos or future pregnancies.

Common recovery questions

Cramping, bloating or light spotting can occur after retrieval, but the extent and duration differ. Ask what medicine you may take for discomfort and whether your existing prescriptions should continue. Your team will advise on follow-up, laboratory updates and any remaining treatment steps. Do not restart strenuous activity merely because another patient felt well the next day.

Warning signs

Seek prompt medical advice for severe or worsening pain, heavy bleeding, fever, breathing problems, marked swelling or symptoms that concern you. Your team should explain possible complications such as infection or ovarian hyperstimulation and where to seek urgent care. Do not wait for an online appointment reply if you are acutely unwell.

Will every retrieved egg become an embryo?

No. Maturity, fertilisation and development differ from egg to egg. Ask your laboratory or clinician how and when updates will be communicated.
