IVF journey

Embryo transfer: what to ask before and after

An embryo transfer is one stage of IVF, not the finish line. Whether a transfer is fresh or uses a frozen embryo depends on the clinical and laboratory plan. A conversation before the procedure can clarify which embryo is being considered, the number to transfer and what happens next.

Planning the transfer

Ask what the team knows about embryo development and what remains uncertain. The decision about how many embryos to transfer should include discussion of multiple-pregnancy risks, not just the hope of maximising a chance in one cycle. Your clinician may explain why transfer is planned now or deferred to a later cycle. Procedures and preparation vary between clinics.

After the procedure

Follow the clinic's instructions about medication and activity. Extended bed rest is not routinely required for many patients, but ask what applies to your own health and treatment. Mild symptoms alone cannot reliably tell you whether implantation has happened. Contact the team if you have significant pain, bleeding or other symptoms they have told you to report.

The pregnancy-test wait

Testing too early can be confusing because timing and medicines affect interpretation. Ask when and how your clinic wants you to test, how you will receive the result and what follow-up is planned for either outcome. The waiting period can be emotionally difficult; consider what support you would like in place before the day arrives.

Does feeling no symptoms mean a transfer has not worked?

No. Symptoms are not a reliable test of pregnancy. Use the testing date and method provided by your treating team.
