Pregnancy care
Pregnancy after IVF: what happens next?
A positive pregnancy test after IVF can bring relief and fresh questions at the same time. The fertility team will usually explain the next blood tests or scans, how long to continue any prescribed medicines and when regular antenatal care takes over. Follow your own team's plan rather than another patient's schedule.
Early follow-up
Ask which test confirms the result, when an early ultrasound is appropriate and who will contact you about findings. A positive test is an important step but does not by itself answer every question about how the pregnancy is progressing. Continue or adjust medication only as directed. If you have pain, bleeding or feel unwell, ask for timely clinical advice.
Planning antenatal care
Share details of the fertility treatment, previous health conditions and any current medicines with your obstetric clinician. Depending on your history, additional monitoring may be discussed; IVF alone does not mean every pregnancy follows the same high-risk pathway. Clarify where routine visits and delivery planning will occur, especially if you attended fertility appointments at a different venue.
Looking after yourself
It is normal to have mixed feelings after a long treatment journey. Bring questions to visits and tell the team if anxiety is affecting sleep or daily life. If you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, faintness or other urgent symptoms, seek prompt medical help rather than sending a website enquiry.
When do I move from the fertility clinic to an obstetrician?
The timing depends on the clinic and your pregnancy. Ask your team for a clear handover plan and copies of relevant treatment information.
