Fertility preservation

Fertility preservation before cancer treatment: first questions

A new cancer diagnosis can make future fertility feel like one more urgent decision. Some treatments may affect eggs, sperm or reproductive organs, but the effect differs by treatment and person. The oncology team should remain central to decisions; ask for a timely fertility referral when future parenthood matters to you.

Ask about the specific treatment plan

Find out whether the proposed chemotherapy, radiation or surgery is expected to affect fertility and whether there is time for a preservation consultation. The answer depends on the diagnosis and how soon cancer treatment must start. Do not postpone oncology care while searching for a general internet answer. Teams can coordinate to discuss what is feasible.

What options may be raised?

Depending on circumstances, options can include freezing eggs, embryos or sperm, and in some settings other approaches. Each has eligibility, timing, consent and storage considerations. Preservation is not always possible or medically appropriate. Ask who will explain your choices, what the evidence is for the option proposed and how it fits with your treatment timetable.

Plan for the longer term

Clarify costs, storage arrangements, future access and who to contact after cancer treatment. Recovery of fertility cannot be assumed, but an immediate preservation decision also cannot guarantee future pregnancy. Support from a counsellor or your care team may help you navigate decisions made under time pressure.

Should I wait until cancer treatment ends to ask about fertility?

If possible, ask before treatment begins. Your oncology team can tell you whether an urgent fertility discussion is appropriate without delaying essential care.
