IVF journey

IVF injections and monitoring: what the visits are for

Medication and monitoring are a central part of many IVF cycles. Ultrasounds, and sometimes blood tests, help a team follow follicle development and adjust the plan. Protocols differ, so another person's dose or number of visits is not a guide to what you should expect.

Why is monitoring needed?

Follicles do not all grow at the same rate. Repeated checks help decide whether to continue or adjust medication and when to plan egg collection. Your team should explain what is being monitored and how results affect the next step. Ask how to reach them if you miss a dose or appointment rather than changing medicines on your own.

What should you ask about injections?

Request a demonstration of storage, preparation, injection timing and safe disposal of needles. Check whether a medicine interacts with anything you already take. Keep a written schedule and ask what to do if a dose is late. Mild discomfort may occur, but your team should tell you which symptoms require prompt assessment.

When should you seek medical advice?

Significant abdominal pain, worsening swelling, breathing difficulty or other severe symptoms need urgent guidance from a clinician. Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is one potential complication of stimulation, and individual risk varies. Before starting, ask the team what warning signs apply to your plan, whom to call outside office hours and when to seek emergency care.

Does needing more monitoring mean the cycle is failing?

Not necessarily. Monitoring helps personalise the plan. Ask your team what a particular visit or change means in your case.
