Pregnancy care

Thyroid health when planning a pregnancy

Thyroid hormones play an important role before and during pregnancy. If you have an underactive or overactive thyroid, take thyroid medication or have had thyroid surgery, it is sensible to discuss your plan with your treating clinician before conception when possible.

Why might a review be needed?

Pregnancy can change thyroid-hormone requirements. Both thyroid levels and the medicines used to treat thyroid conditions may need monitoring. Symptoms such as tiredness overlap with many other conditions, so decisions should not be based on symptoms alone. A clinician can decide whether blood testing is needed and interpret results using the relevant clinical context.

Medication and monitoring questions

Tell your clinician exactly what you take, including supplements. Do not stop or change a prescribed thyroid medicine without medical advice. Ask when testing should be repeated after conception and how results will be shared. If you have a specialist already, clarify which clinician will coordinate thyroid and pregnancy care.

Preparing for appointments

Bring prior results if available, a medication list and the date of your last period. If you have a positive pregnancy test, contact your clinician rather than waiting until a later routine visit to mention a known thyroid condition. There is no single target or dose that fits everyone; your team should explain what applies to you.

Should I stop thyroid medicine when I become pregnant?

Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own. Contact your treating clinician promptly for advice about your specific medication and monitoring.
